Although, with the increased popularity and use of dietary supplements such as CBD oil, there is also growing scientific interest in the effects of cannabinoids derived from industrial hemp, such as cannabidiol (CBD), on the body. Recent studies show that CBD oil improves blood flow to certain parts of the brain. But what does this mean, and how can it support your health?

CBD Increases Blood Flow to the Brain
A study shows that just one dose of cannabidiol (CBD) could already help improve blood flow to certain parts of the brain. As scientists discovered, the cannabinoid derived from industrial hemp increases blood flow to the hippocampus. This is a region of the brain responsible for memory and learning ability. The study also shows an increase in blood flow to the brain’s decision-making center.

These findings could potentially offer better target therapies for diseases that affect memory, claim researchers from University College of London (UCL). Alzheimer’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder, for example. “To our knowledge, this is the first study to find that CBD increases blood flow to key areas involved in memory processing, particularly in the hippocampus,” says Dr Michael Bloomfield.

Dr Bloomfield is the lead author of this study and a professor of psychiatry at UCL. In his professional opinion, the results of the study “support the view that CBD has effects on blood flow specific to the region in the human brain, which has previously been questioned.” But how was this discovered?

CBD Research
To reach this conclusion, the research team recruited 15 young, healthy participants with no prior experience with cannabis products who were willing to participate in the study. Each participant received a capsule containing 600 mg of cannabidiol—or a placebo—to be taken on separate days over the course of a week. Seven days later, participants were asked to take the capsule they had not previously taken. Of course, the participants did not know which capsule they were taking during this randomized, crossover, double-blind study.

The researchers then measured the participants’ cerebral blood flow (CBF) three hours after swallowing the capsule. This was done using a brain scanning MRI technique called arterial rotation labeling. A technique that measures changes in blood oxygen levels, allowing scientists to analyse the effects of CBD on brain blood flow.

These results prove that CBD – the main component of CBD oil – significantly increases blood flow to specific parts of the brain. In this case the hippocampus, which is responsible for our ability to learn and remember things, and the orbital cortex. This part of the brain plays an important role in the decision-making process. Obviously, these results show potential for the cannabinoid derived from industrial hemp as a treatment for various brain-related conditions.

Potential Treatment for Alzheimer’s
“Cannabidiol is one of the main components of cannabis. And it’s gaining attention for its therapeutic potential,” according to Bloomfield. “There is evidence that CBD may help reduce symptoms of psychosis and anxiety. “There is some evidence suggesting that CBD may improve memory function,” says the professor regarding the potential of cannabidiol.

In addition, the research team suggests that these findings could help in the development of treatments for various conditions. These include, for example, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. This provides further support for previous findings regarding the potential of CBD oil to treat stress and anxiety-related disorders. In addition, this study shows that this non-psychoactive cannabis compound offers benefits in supporting and protecting brain health and cognitive function. Consequently, CBD oil appears to offer health benefits to people with or without the aforementioned mental health conditions.

Source: ducthnaturalhealing.com

“CBD improves blood flow to the brain” For a long time, it was unclear what impact cannabis has on brain function and health.
