The Antifungal Action of Hemp

Fungal infections, such as vaginal thrush or yeast infection, athlete’s foot and onychomycosis (also known as nail fungus or fungal nail), are common conditions that affect millions of people worldwide.

These infections are often caused by overgrowth of fungi such as Candida albicans – for vaginal infections – and dermatophytes – for foot and nail fungus. Traditional treatments can be effective, but side effects (such as skin irritation) or resistance to treatment make natural alternatives unattractive.

Cannabis is increasingly being investigated for its antifungal potential, especially through cannabinoids and terpenes. In this blog, I will discuss three recent studies that highlight these properties and how products like
Happy Hemp Yoni
and
Happy Hemp Skin
can help treat these infections.

👉What are fungi?

Fungi are single or multicellular organisms found everywhere in nature and can sometimes cause infections. Candida albicans is a yeast that usually lives on the skin, in the mouth, in the digestive tract and in the vagina. When overgrown, it can cause vaginal candidiasis(Candida albicans), a common infection in women, with symptoms such as itching, burning and white, clot-like discharge. According to statistics, vaginal candidiasis is one of the most common fungal infections, often triggered by antibiotics, hormonal changes or a weakened immune system.

Foot fungus, such as athlete s foot – caused by dermatophytes – often affects the feet and causes itching, redness and exfoliation. Onychomycosis or nail mycosis is an infection that affects the nails, causing thickening, discoloration and brittleness. It is often caused by the same dermatophytes that cause toenail fungus and can be persistent due to slow nail growth. Nail fungus often starts as a small white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail and can spread, leading to thickening, discoloration and brittleness. It affects toenails more often than fingernails than fingernails on the hands and can be contagious.

🌿Anti-fungal action of cannabis

🔍Three recent studies offer evidence for the antifungal properties of cannabis and its constituents, especially against Candida albicans and dermatophytes.

✔️Μια 2024 study examined extracts of five cannabis varieties and their activity against fungi and bacteria. All extracts showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporum. Importantly, the activity was not solely dependent on THC or CBD levels, but also on terpenes such as β-myrcene (β-myrcene), β-caryophyllene (β-caryophyllene), α- and β-pinene (α- & β-pinene), p-cymene and limonene (limonene), supporting the “entourage effect” hypothesis. This is relevant for both vaginal and foot fungal infections, in that C. albicans is a major causative agent of vaginal candidiasis and dermatophytes may have similar mechanisms in nail infections.

✔️Μια another review, published in the journal Antibiotics, examines research on the antimicrobial properties of cannabinoids. It points out that CBD, CBG and CBC show antifungal activity against Candida albicans. Although the focus of the paper is on bacteria, antifungal activity against yeasts is also discussed. The study suggests that terpenes contribute to the antimicrobial activity, enhancing the potential for their use in topical applications, such as for foot and nail fungus.

✔️Μια third publication focuses on the less common (minor) terpenes of cannabis, such as borneol, camphene and linalool. These terpenes demonstrate antifungal, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. In particular, β-caryophyllene is reported as a terpene with antifungal activity, binding CB2 receptors and inhibiting fungal growth. Terpenes such as limonene (limonene) and α-pinene (α-pinene) are also reported for their antifungal potential against fungi such as Candida albicans and dermatophytes, which are applied to athlete’s foot and nail fungus.

✅Role of Happy Hemp Yoni and Happy Hemp Skin products

Happy Hemp has developed two products that harness the antifungal properties of hemp:

🔹Happy Hemp Yoni: Designed for vaginal fungal infections, such as vaginal mycosis or yeast infection. The product contains hemp extracts rich in terpenes such as limonene and alpha-pinene, which according to studies show antifungal activity against Candida albicans. It is applied topically, providing immediate relief from symptoms such as itching and burning.

🔹Happy Hemp Skin: it targets skin conditions and fungal infections of the feet, such as athlete’s foot, and nail fungus (onychomycosis). It is applied to the skin and nails, targeting dermatophytes through terpenes such as alpha- and beta-caryophyllene which have antifungal properties. In the case of nail fungus, the product can be applied to the affected nails and surrounding skin, and the treatment should be repeated regularly until the nail is fully grown.

Made with high quality hemp extracts, Happy Hemp products aim to offer a natural, effective solution for fungal infections. Through topical application, users can directly target affected areas. This natural approach can offer hope to many struggling with these common infections.
