The study shows that CBD-A and CBG-A could prevent and treat COVID-19 infections
Hemp oil comes to the rescue once again, it seems, as researchers from Oregon in the United States demonstrate that certain cannabinoids from industrial hemp could potentially prevent and treat infections caused by the coronavirus. The acidic forms of two extremely popular cannabinoids appear to prevent the dangerous virus from entering human cells. It helps prevent COVID-19 infections and reduce the severity of symptoms when people do become infected.

But these studies focus on the treatment of coronavirus, or better still, its effects on the lungs. This new study “Cannabinoids block cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 and emerging variants”, published in the Journal of Natural Products, rather shows how cannabinoids prevent the virus from entering human cells completely. Not only does it help to treat cornovirus when you are infected. but actually preventing your body from becoming infected with COVID-19 in the first place.
How Cannabinoid Acids Prevent COVID-19 Infection
As discovered by scientists at Oregon Health & Science University —led by principal investigator Richard van Breemen—two specific cannabinoid acids appear to be effective against various variants of the novel coronavirus. Apparently, these non-decarboxylated cannabinoids bind to the virus’s spike proteins. Consequently, they block a key mechanism used by the SARS virus to penetrate human cells and spread the infection.
The two cannabinoid acids responsible for these effects are, respectively, cannabidiolic acid (CBD-A, as found in CBD-A oil) and cannabigerolic acid (CBG-A). As reported in Forbes magazine, lead researcher van Breemen said: “These cannabinoid acids are abundant in industrial hemp and in many cannabis extracts. They are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans.” He explained that CBD-A and CBG-A “proved equally effective against SARS-CoV-2 variants. “This includes the B.1.1.7 variant, which was first detected in the United Kingdom, and the B.1.351 variant, which was first detected in South Africa.”
By targeting the protein spike, these cannabinoid acids act like current vaccines and SARS-CoV-2 antibody therapy, but “orally bioavailable and with a long history or safe human use,” the researchers write. Unlike these relatively new treatments that are being promoted on the pharmaceutical market at the moment.
“Any part of the infection and replication cycle is a potential target for anti-viral intervention and the binding of the protein spike receptor binding domain to the human cell surface ACE2 receptor is a critical step in this cycle,” according to van Breemen. He draws these conclusions after extensive in vitro laboratory research with his dedicated team.
Their findings suggest that so-called cell entry inhibitors, such as the aforementioned acids from cannabis, “could be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and also to reduce infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells”. group: “are bound to spike proteins, so these proteins cannot bind to the ACE2 enzyme. Does this mean that CBG oil cures the coronavirus or prevents you from catching COVID-19? Who knows! At this point, further research is needed to understand exactly how treatment with cannabis oil could help prevent COVID-19 infections or reduce its symptoms. However, with this positive news about our beloved plant and its potential effects on this life-threatening virus, it probably doesn’t hurt to give it a try.
