Cannabidiol (CBD) as a drug for Crohn’s disease

Crohn’s disease is one of the many conditions that cannabis can manage. First-hand patient reports and science show how CBD hemp treats Crohn’s disease therapeutically.

The medical use of cannabis is over time becoming more and more popular and a mainstream trend in a very dynamic way. Just last week four states voted to legalise the medical use of cannabis. And there is more and more broad support for it than there ever has been.

Crohn’s disease is one of the many health conditions that cannabis can help treat. First-hand patient reports and science show exactly how cannabidiol (CBD), one of the many cannabinoids in cannabis and one of the two main ones (the other being THC), treats Crohn’s disease therapeutically.

What is Crohn’s disease?

Crohn’s disease is a specific type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). When you have Crohn’s disease, you have long-term swelling and irritation in your gastrointestinal tract. This leads to all sorts of uncomfortable abdominal pains and cramps.

People with Crohn’s disease also experience persistent diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, constipation and a host of other very unpleasant consequences. There are currently 780,000 Americans who have this disorder.

CBD treats Crohn’s disease therapeutically

The medical use of cannabis can help treat the symptoms of Crohn’s disease. In particular, hemp CBD can work with very encouraging effects.

CBD is a cannabinoid. These chemicals occur naturally in cannabis. And it turns out that cannabinoids – especially CBD – bind to specific receptors in our body[8]. When this happens, CBD can help reduce pain, reduce swelling, and affect things like mood, appetite, and physical sensation.

CBD can help reduce the pain and swelling associated with this disorder. And by reducing, if not eliminating, these things, it ultimately makes it easier for the patient to eat, maintain a healthy body weight, and live a comfortable life.

Science says CBD can cure Crohn’s disease

But we should not rely on personal experience alone. Researchers are also learning more about how CBD can help treat Crohn’s disease.

A 2012 study looked at 13 patients diagnosed with IBD. They were given a three-month course of cannabis for medical use administered by smoking.

The end of the study presents what the researchers found:

“Treatment with inhaled cannabis for three months improves quality of life measures, disease activity index and causes weight gain and body mass index (BMI) to rise in long-term IBD patients.”

A year later, another group of researchers gave cannabis to several patients with Crohn’s disease. This study came to similar conclusions.

A year later, another group of researchers[11] gave cannabis to several patients with Crohn’s disease. This study came to similar conclusions.

The Final Conclusion

It shows quite clearly that cannabis can help treat Crohn’s disease.

Most of the effects come from CBD. Specifically, when CBD binds to our body’s cannabinoid receptors, it helps regulate[12] pain and discomfort, while helping to reduce inflammation and improve appetite. All of these combine to give patients with Crohn’s disease an effective and safe form of treatment.

Hopefully this additional research[13] will happen now that the medical use of cannabis is increasingly legalised. The more popular it becomes, the more patients will be able to benefit from it. At the same time, it will also make it easier for researchers to carry out studies and clinical trials.
