CBD oil is often mentioned in connection with (chronic) pain, mental disorders and autoimmune diseases. However, there are diseases that people usually don’t want to discuss openly. Take fungal infections for example. Although we could all easily have , most patients suffering from fungal infections are embarrassed to talk about it. Obviously this is not necessary and could also hinder proper treatment… Although fortunately, studies show that these infections could potentially be treated with accessible cannabis products such as CBD and CBG oil:
Fungal infections
In general, a fungus (plural: fungi) is a living microorganism found in the air, water or soil. Some well-known fungi are yeast, mould and mushrooms, for example. Although there are also fungi that could live in or on the human body. Most of them are not dangerous to our health, we should add.
On the other hand, some fungi can affect our health in different ways. It is clear that most of these infections are not fatal, but they are very uncomfortable and very often difficult to treat. Fungal meningitis and other fungal infections capable of invading the bloodstream are less common, although these could be fatal without proper treatment.
The most common fungal infections are a fungal infection of the nails and athlete’s foot, to name a few. Other infections you may have heard of are candida, ringworm and tinae cruris (jock itch) and vaginal infection, of course.
Antifungal medicines
Unfortunately, most fungal infections are difficult to treat – and there is no medicine available to treat all types of fungi. This is because fungi can manifest in the body in a variety of ways, which makes it difficult to treat the infection with medication. For example, most skin and nail infections require only topical treatment. However, other, more serious infections may require oral medication for successful treatment.
One thing that most of these drugs have in common, is that they target ergosterol in fungi. This is the so-called “sterol found in the cell membranes of fungi, serving many of the same functions that cholesterol serves in animal cells”, according to Wikipedia. As many fungi cannot survive without this sterol, it has proven to be a useful target for antifungal drugs.
The downside to many of these drugs is that they are known to offer a variety of side effects. Especially oral medication can cause feelings of sickness, digestive problems (stomach pain, flatulence and diarrhoea) and skin rashes for example. Considering that Cannabidiol (CBD) does not cause these side effects, it could potentially offer us a healthier alternative to these drugs.
CBD oil for the treatment of fungal infections
Because in addition to providing the necessary balance to your body’s endocannabinoid system (ESS) to soothe a variety of ailments. Industrial hemp cannabinoids such as CBD can also be very useful for treating fungal infections. However, unlike commonly used medicine and prescription drugs, they do so without having side effects.
As described in a 2011 study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, plant cannabinoids such as cannabidiol, cannabigerol(CBG) and cannabichromine (CBC) have potent antifungal properties. Making them interesting compounds for research in the search for effective antifungal treatments. Although these are not the only substances from cannabis that are worth considering when it comes to treating fungal infections.

Another study shows that essential oils carrying the aromatic terpenes alpha-pinene and delta-3-Careen also offer powerful antifungal properties. While a different study showed the antifungal effects of beta-caryophyllene, one of the most common terpenes in industrial hemp, which is also found in CBD oil 8%. The scientists behind this research noted that it took terpene only two to four hours to deliver noticeable results. This means that this terpene is extremely effective in killing the fungus.
Which CBD/CBG products to use?
Although research on the subject is relatively scarce, there is still some evidence of the effectiveness of some cannabinoids in treating fungal infections. And taking into account the lack of side effects and the accessibility of the products. it certainly won’t hurt to try treating fungal infections with cannabis supplements such as CBD oil, CBG oil and CBD cosmetics.
Depending on the type of infection, we recommend using full-spectrum oral cannabis oil and trying our CBD cosmetics externally for fungal skin infections. And while most people automatically choose CBD oil as a potential treatment, we believe our CBG oil (with a 50/50 ratio of CBD and CBG) could offer even better results than a CBD-only product. Will you try it?
