CBD improves blood flow to the brain

“CBD improves blood flow to the brain”

It has long been uncertain what impact cannabis has on brain function and health. Although with the increased popularity and use of dietary supplements such as CBD oil, there is also increased scientific interest in the effects of cannabinoids derived from industrial hemp such as Cannabidiol (CBD) on the body. Recent studies prove that CBD oil improves blood flow to certain parts of the brain. But what does this mean and how can it support your health?

CBD increases blood flow to the brain
A study shows that just one dose of Cannabidiol (CBD) could already help improve blood flow to certain parts of the brain. As scientists have discovered, the cannabinoid derived from bioherbic hemp increases blood flow to the hippocampus. This is an area of the brain that is responsible for your memory and learning ability. Although the study also shows an increase in blood flow to the decision-making part of the brain.

These findings could potentially offer better target therapies for diseases that affect memory, claim researchers from University College of London (UCL). Alzheimer’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder, for example. “To our knowledge, this is the first study to find that CBD increases blood flow to key areas involved in memory processing, particularly in the hippocampus,” says Dr Michael Bloomfield.

Dr Bloomfield is the lead author of this study and a professor of psychiatry at UCL. In his professional opinion, the results of the study “support the view that CBD has effects on blood flow specific to the region in the human brain, which has previously been questioned.” But how was this discovered?

CBD research
To reach this conclusion, the research team found 15 young and healthy participants with no experience of cannabis products who were willing to participate in the study. Each of whom received a capsule with 600mg of Cannabidiol – or placebo – to be consumed on separate days over the course of a week. Seven days later, participants were asked to consume the capsule they did not take. Apparently, participants did not know which capsule they were taking during this randomized, crossover, double-blind design.

The researchers then measured the participants’ cerebral blood flow (CBF) three hours after swallowing the capsule. This was done using a brain scanning MRI technique called arterial rotation labeling. A technique that measures changes in blood oxygen levels, allowing scientists to analyse the effects of CBD on brain blood flow.

These results prove that CBD – the main component of CBD oil – significantly increases blood flow to specific parts of the brain. In this case the hippocampus, which is responsible for our ability to learn and remember things, and the orbital cortex. This part of the brain plays an important role in the decision-making process. Obviously, these results show potential for the cannabinoid derived from industrial hemp as a treatment for various brain-related conditions.

Possible cure for Alzheimer’s
“Cannabidiol is one of the main components of cannabis. And it’s gaining interest for its therapeutic potential,” according to Bloomfield “There is evidence that CBD may help reduce symptoms of psychosis and anxiety. There is some evidence to suggest that CBD can improve memory function,” the professor says of Cannabidiol’s potential.

In addition, the research team suggests that these results could help develop treatments for various conditions. Including, for example, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Further support for previous findings on the potential of CBD oil for the treatment of stress and stress-related disorders. Besides, this study shows that the non-psychoactive compound of cannabis offers effects in supporting and protecting brain health and cognitive function. Consequently, CBD oil appears to offer healthy effects to those with or without aforementioned mental conditions.
